How to handle concurrent update requests on a record by multiple users?

For instance, if multiple users all open the same record in form view, the first one to perform the action should acquire an exclusive 'write' lock, meaning that, as long as he's viewing the record, no other user can update it.

How to achieve this with OpenObject in custom modules?
