This might be a FAQ question but I can't seem to find a way to do it in OpenERP.

Our company sometimes take orders from customers that we don't have stock for. We want to create purchase order for these sales orders to send to our suppliers.

Instead of copy everything from a sales order into a new purchase order, is there a way in OpenERP to generate a purchase order from a sales order automatically, or just convert a sales order into a purchase order?

It turns out that the solution to this issue lie within the current capability of OpenERP.

When Sales Order are created where there is not enough stock and product procurement method is "On Order", purchase orders for the short quantity will be automatically created.

Furthermore, if you have multiple Sales Orders with the same short quantity in certain SKUs, a purchase order will be created with each SO. However, often times you want to send just one PO to the supplier with all the orders combined. You can combine POs for the same supplier if a few requirements are met. OpenERP will tell you exactly what it needs before attempting a PO merge.

The pre-requisite for this to happen is that the products in question have to be set up as "Make to Order" and type as "Buy" v.s. "Produce", so that the purchase orders can be automatically generated with the nightly run of Warehouse Scheduler.
