Very new to OpenERP.

In setting up products, I wish to instantiate product categories of "Stocking", "Non-Stocking", and "Labor".

When I go to "Sales->Configuration->Product->Product Categories" and ask for a new record, the system gives me an error of "AccessError"; "Operation Prohibited by Access Rules....."

I read the manual and I'm convinced I'm not understanding the purpose of "Product Categories" correctly.

Can someone please explain to me what the typical usage of "Product Categories" are? And If I am applying the field correctly, can someone give me an idea on how to get around my error?

I would be very appreciative!

Sincerely and respectfully,

Dave

You can do that, but the system already supports them in other places which it uses to make decisions.

So product type can be Stockable / Consumable / Service (first 2 are stock, last one services/labor)
Make to Stock / Make to Order (e.g. Stocked and Non-stocked)
Buy / Produce - Purchase (or subcontract) / Manufacture (or service yourself)

Product categories are still important, they can be used in pricelist rules, gl account determination (e.g. Sales Account / Inventory Account).

Your access error is possibly related to not having created a stock journal, or alternatively just due to not setting up access rights.

Thank you for the clarification. I figured that I was misunderstanding something, and indeed I was.

Thank you for the assistance!
